Wired 14.02: Buddha on the Brain

The Dalai Lama recently gave a speech to the 14,000 attendees of the Society for Neuroscience's annual conference regarding some interesting connections between buddhism and the self-manipulation of one's brain.

This, to me, is a trip. Here is proof that one can alter their physical being via their mental self. While Wired only brushes on some of the implications of this study, they touch on the key elements, enough so to warrant further investigation.

I just don't understand why so many are against such a pursuit. Don't agree with it, that's your right, but why protest it? Oh, cause half the protestors are Chinese and they have a bone to pick with Tibet. Right. Silly me, here I thought scientist would be above such petty crap.

Ultimately, Buddhists and scientists hold very different views of the universe. Buddhists believe that mental and physical realms have an equal claim on reality. That is, mental constructs that science considers imaginary are, to Buddhists, objectively real and perceptible. In contrast, neuroscientists are materialists.

Firstly, there're too many different types of Buddhists to make such a general statement. Secondly, I'm pretty darn sure that the core of Buddhism holds that the "mental and physical realms" are one and the same. This article is making them sound like dualists.

    Shots

How you and your body reacts to the material world is dependent on how you percieve the material world.

By altering the way your mind percieves things, you are also able to change how you react to the world.

Which not only sounds pretty far out, it is pretty far out. Think of Neo in the Matrix, but instead of green code, you see something else (which I don't know what, cos i haven't reached that stage yet... nor do i expect to).
